What is Urogynecology?
Learn about this specialty that diagnoses and treats bladder and pelvic problems
Most often, incontinence is not an isolated problem, but an interconnected one. Disorders like loss of bladder or bowel control, prolapse (falling) of the uterus or other pelvic organs tend to come in clusters and to affect each other.
Women benefit from a fairly new specialty called urogynecology for diagnosing and treating problems of the pelvic floor as a whole. The urogynecologist evaluates all the structures and systems of the female pelvis – including organs, nerves, ligaments, muscles and blood vessels. The result is a much higher quality of care for you.
There are a wide variety of treatments available for incontinence and female pelvic disorders, depending on the exact nature of the problem. These include:
-
Special exercises, including Kegel exercises, to strengthen the muscles surrounding the openings in the pelvic floor
-
Electrical stimulation, a gentle way to automatically exercise the pelvic floor muscles
-
NeoControl, a non-invasive therapy
-
Medications
-
Peri-urethral injections, a new office-based procedure effective for some types of incontinence
-
Reconstructive pelvic surgery to repair the pelvic in a single procedure
-
Minimally invasive surgery to lift the pelvic floor
The most important thing to remember is you are not alone. Incontinence occurs in women of all ages, and is thought to affect one in 10 of those age 65 and older. Don’t let incontinence limit your life.
